Fang it!
This is us, in a nutshell. A strange and wonderful kaleidoscope of the people we've met along the way. Our adventure has been one for a lifetime, and if it's taught us anything it's this - we're still on it. And we're going to take you with us. Every day we're going to share a bit of our world with you. The places we've been, the charcters we met and the food we cooked for them. Who knows where it will go from there. We are currently in Berlin and India. Often in the UK. Singapore and somtimes even Japan. New to Sol Food? Let me break it down for you: This is the story of a cook and a filmmaker who merged their skills to create something new, or very old - we haven’t figured it out yet. We are still in the heat of compiling a cookbook of adventures, spanning 900 days and 30 some countries. A mixture of food and stories that brought us into the hearts of the people we met and to the very edges of our own sanity. The only regret is not finding the magic mushrooms which are known to grow in Nepalese Rhino poop. What a recipe it could have been. * ‘Fang It’ comes from an old Chinese word for ‘recipe’ or ‘concoction’, and a bit of colorful Australian slang which roughly means ’pedal to the metal’.

Chapter 8 | The Philosophers Stone
The key to ever lasting life, that's what we found here. "Most times your brain will fall before your body." That's what he said to us, among many other little gems of knowledge. But there in those words I've found a truth - we are all capable of more than we can imagine. I try and fail every day, but still I must remember this. To trust my body and keep pushing my mental limitations. I'll shut up now and let him tell you the rest. Thanks Simon! Music by Chapelier Fou - La Metamorphosis De Vide.

Chapter 22 | Bohemian Rhapsody
Our days in Shillong were something out of a dream. There used to be a restaurant at the bustling intersection of Malki Point, where musicians and poets and doctors would get together to elevate eachother's company with good food and strong drinks. It later became a homeopathic clinic belonging to the father of our friend Tara. Since he passed away the clinic had fallen into disrepair, and it was her dream to restore the building to it's former glory, bring back the spirit of La Bohemienne and reconnect with her father.

Chapter 25 | Humble Victory
For months we had been trying to get our dear tuk tuk 'Monika' out of India. But every door was closed to us. Every door but one - a garage door. Inside we found one of the most astonishing stories from our 2 year journey. Vijay means 'victory' in the Hindi language. And it seems only fitting since he is a champion racer and builder of motorcycles. His presence however is more akin to a philosophical fisherman. Pondering the complexities and beauty of life as the river flows by. But in his case it's river of asphalt, rushing past his feet at well over 200 km per hour. Somehow we were invited into his world, all three of us, to be treated with some traditional Indian hospitality. And when our time was up, Monika had a make-over and a ticket out of the country. Pretty impressive Vijay. We must say. Happy Birthday Brother.

Planters | Episode 1 - Meet James
The first episode of our Planters series. We were tempted to call this one 'The Great Graftsby', but somehow managed to resist. 'Van of La Mancha' would have also been perfect. If you're not getting the literary references it's okay, James only read a few books in his life. He was too busy writing his own story. After leaving his beloved city of Liverpool he decided the best thing to do was travel the world and plant trees. It was brutal. The forestry industry is a beast that eats up young people and spits out timber. James decided he could find a better way. Or if that wasn't possible, he'd make one. He would make a company that would protect the planet, give better jobs to the people and create a purpose for businesses who wanted to make a difference. An impossible dream, most would say. But like J. Gatsby or Don Quixote he would chase it anyways, only he'd need an entire army of Nick Carraway's and Sancho Panza's to get away with this one... Okay if you're still not getting the references: 'Don Quixote' by Cervantes, is about an old Spanish gentlemen who goes west and believes he is a knight. No one believes him except for a peasant named Sancho Panza. With Sancho by his side Don Quixote fights for the forgotten principles of chivarly while wearing a shaving bowl on his head and get's his ass kicked many times for being so crazy. It is perhaps the best book ever written. 'The Great Gatsby' by Fitzgerald, is set in the roaring 20's of America. It follows the glorious attempts of J. Gatsby to win back the love of his life, Daisy. The story is famous for it's allusions and symbolism, but in short it's about a guy trying to bring back the past, and *spoiler alert* failing miserably. Let's hope James will not join the ranks of these literary giants, but instead finds a way to survive his impossible dream.

Planters | Episode 4 - The Foreman
We've probably all had to work for an ass at some point or another. Someone who dosn't appriciate your time or effort, and dosnt' get to know you at all. It's a drag. Especially when that job is physcially demanding, potentially dangerous and mentally taxing. That's why a good Foreman can make or break a planting team. Jakub wakes up in the dark of the morning and plans his day - Starting with a drive down the twisting back roads of Scotland, then leading a full squad of planters over rivers, mountains and onto site where they will work until its dark again. After the talley sheets, food shopping and a cigarette, he'll sleep and do it all again the next day. He's also going to outplant everyone. What's the trick - Keeping the spirits high, keeping the trees in line and trying not to wander off the map when the clouds roll in and everything goes white. Think the 9-5 is a grind? Try 5am - 9pm. Plant trees! Thank you Jakub for your heroic actions every day.
